Well, here's one of my own recipes from back when I was a vegetarian. I cooked a lot of soups at school (especially using a slow cooker) as it was cheap, easy, healthy and provided me with enough to freeze in single servings to take with me to work or just heat up when I didn't feel like cooking but the pocket book didn't allow for ordering pizza. Be forewarned, the 4 teaspoons of curry paste might be too much for some tastebuds to handle (also depends on the heat factor of the paste itself), so play it safe and you can always add more heat later. This is great to let simmer on the stove - it will make your house smell very cozy!

One of the reasons I like omelettes so much is that they are so versatile. My sister loves them plain with only cheese, my husband likes them dressed up with cheese, hot sauce and salsa and my favourite changes depending on what's in the fridge haha. Go to the end of this post for some ideas for great combinations. Once I had mastered scrambled eggs as a kid, this was the second recipe I was allowed to make on my own. It's great for kids because it's so versatile and they can add whichever fillings they want.

Oh, and as far as I'm concerned, the only thing better than breakfast is breakfast for dinner - so next time you get home from work late, hungry and tired, why not cook one up instead of giving in to the temptation to dial for take away?

One dish in particular, the Ale-8 Pound Cake was something I thought I'd like to share. It's a pound cake flavoured with a regional drink called Ale-8. Julia, the gracious chef, explained to us that it's a pop that is native to Kentucky and is like gingerale... but fruitier. Apparently the distribution rights are now owned by Coca-Cola but the pop continues to be made (and I think only available) in Kentucky. I would imagine that this cake could turn out well using other types of gingerale; however, if you want it to be authentic, see if you can track down the real thing.

This is a recipe my mom started making a few years back. With our family, it seems like someone finds a good recipe and then suddenly everyone is making it for every big family get-together we have! They make these as hors d'oeuvres at Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, birthdays and most other get togethers when a good make-ahead dish is called for. Frankly, after a year or so of having these at every holiday, you'd think we'd be sick of them but it never happens. (Yes, they're that good!)

The best part about this recipe - besides its simplicity and how much your guests will love them! - is that you can make them up to a few days ahead of time. Just keep the crisp wonton cups on a tray in the fridge and the filling in a separate sealed container; then, when the guests arrive (or you get to the host's place), it's as easy as scooping mixture into the cups and popping them into the oven to heat up. Who needs expensive store-bought, MSG-filled, salty appetizers when you can make your own from fresh ingredients?! And if you want your fellow party go-ers to think you had a caterer bring these over, you won't have a hard time convincing them :)

Nestled in East Hyde Park, Bankok Bistro has become popular both among neighbourhood residents and those willing to travel for a good noodle dish. Over the last year, I have visited several times, testing not only its superb Pad Thai (which the chef so obligingly serves up for me sans peanuts) but several noodle dishes and appetizers...

Although apples aren’t necessarily in season at local markets all year round, they are usually readily available and provide a good nutritional bang for your buck. If you have 15 minutes, you can easily throw this dish together and bake it while you’re enjoying dinner. If you have a little extra time, make it up to a day or two ahead of time and reheat if desired. I will warn you though, those of you who choose to make it ahead should know that this dessert isn’t likely to stick around very long.

Gramma often will drop these off at ours and my aunt and uncle’s house during the workday as a surprise… usually with a little corner removed. Her excuse? ‘I had to test it to make sure it was okay for all of you,’ she’d say. We know the truth though – there’s no resisting a warm apple crisp!

This is great served on its own; however the hubby loves it with vanilla ice cream and I like it with warm milk poured over top.

Chili Con Carne is one of the dishes that my mom makes that I could eat any day of the year. I have memories of also eating it at Carnaval (a Canadian winter time festival) in a church basement as a kid. My dad has made an especially tasty version that substitutes moose or deer meet for half of the beef as well. This chili is just as good spicy hot as it is mild since the mixture of flavours add a great punch of flavour. My only suggestion regarding spice level is that the milder the chili, the more salt will probably be required.

This chunky clam chowder is perfect for a cool or miserable day... and I promise it will warm you up from the inside out. You can make lots of substitutions to this, based on your taste but this is the combination I like best. Serve with a hunk of crusty bread or some oyster crackers and enjoy!

See below for instructions on how to cook this in a crock pot.

It seems to me that nearly every family has their own version of the classic Banana Muffin recipe. Some like little muffins, some like them sweet and others like them dotted with chocolate chips. This recipe is pretty close to fool proof and is easily changed to suit a variety of tastes.

This is a great use for overripe bananas – and if you don’t have time to make muffins, stick the bananas in the freezer (don’t worry, they’ll turn black and look disgusting but they’re still good to use!) since this ripens them further, they’re actually even sweeter this way.
